Vickery Creek

Vickery Creek Study

Still gathering ideas for a series of oils, today I took a walk along Vickery Creek.

Vickery Creek is in Roswell Georgia and feeds the Chattahochee River. A mill was built there in the 1839, ruins of which still stand, to produce cotton goods. Now it has been developed into an area with trails and a new covered bridge over the creek.

The creek provides many subjects for sketching or painting. I’ll be going back this week most likely.

Be sure to click the images on this and the previous two posts to get a larger look at the sketch. Charcoal sketches lose a bit of detail as you reduce them.

You are right, Don, about to see charcoal paintings enlarged to get full benefit– it is just stunning.

Glad you liked it. It occurred to me that some visitors might not click on the images so I thought I’d give a nudge. :-)

Wonderful composition! I’m wondering what size your original sketch was. I always seem to need to work larger in charcoal.

  4. Hi Tina,
Thank you for the kind words :-) Glad you like the sketch.

    The original is 5×7.

I sketch charcoals in a 5.5 x 8.5 Canson Dessin sketch pad. On this particular one, I eye-balled a border at 5 x 7 centered on the page.

On the previous two sketches, I used the entire s 5.5 x 8.5 page.

Once they are in my PC, I crop to the edge and add the black border.

  9. Hi Don,

Wow this is really beautiful. Really love the light and dark contrasts. Very mysterious and intriguing. No doubt this would make a great oil painting.
