Fishing for Gifts?

More online Christmas shopping has led me to consider the lowly fish. Fish have a hard life. Used to be a fish could swim around a lake and hardly ever see a worm on a line as long as he stayed away from the banks. Fishermen were on their own when it came to finding them. Really good fishermen, who fished the same lake a lot, got pretty good at guessing where the fish were. But there still wasn’t all that much pressure for a fish to worry.

Then came technology and technology hath no mercy. The result is a fisherman’s dream and a fish’s nightmare. I wouldn’t be surprised if fish don’t now suffer from a good deal of depression. I mean I have not seen a really happy fish in a loooooong time. I still catch them from the bank and throw them back when I go fishin’. I’ve noticed the one’s I catch look really nervous and edgy, like my boss used to look when sales were down. Didn’t used to be that way. Fish used to be more carefree.

But I digress…

While Christmas shopping online for electronics for the car, the boat, and for hiking, I found a great online store that carries just about all of it. Northeast Marine Electronics is the company. Fishfinders and GPS units, and radar, and binoculars and compasses…just about any kind of electronic gadget for finding stuff is what they’re all about. It’s mostly a marine oriented store but all these electronics come in landlubber versions too. So if you’re having a hard time finding stuff, like fish, or your way back to the marina, or your way back to the truck from your deer stand…check ‘em out. These gadgets make useful Christmas gifts for the person in need of them.

Just don’t think about the fish.

Shopping on a Budget

Shopping on a Budget

We all like to get a deal on whatever we buy. The Internet has become a convenient way to find deals on practically anything. This makes shopping on a budget a bit easier. One thing that has gone missing though is a single source for all the coupons and deals being offered by all the major retailers like Barnes & Noble, Office Depot, Circuit City, Target, and such. Well, I’ve found a site that consolidates a lot of these coupons and rebates. It’s called Ebates.com. You can click the link above to pay them a visit if you like.

The site has been featured on CNN, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, Good Housekeeping…so they aren’t a fly by night affair. You do have to sign up to take advantage of the offers but so far, I’ve experienced no adverse effects from doing so.

As for budget shopping, aside from using a site like ebates.com to your advantage, we males could take the hint from the sketch above and have a happy household well into 2007.

Christmas Wedding Planning Tip

This year marks my 16th wedding anniversary and our wedding was a Christmas wedding. By that I mean it was during the Christmas season. Our wedding was very simple but nice. We had finger foods for the guests, flowers, candelabras, two cakes, photographer, indoor restrooms…all for about $3000 in 1990.

Weddings, as I’m sure you know if you’re a parent of a recently married person, have become really expensive affairs. When my last employer’s daughter was married a few years back, many of us were invited. It was a country club affair. At best guess, we figured the whole thing must have run about $50,000. That includes all pre-wedding and post wedding expenses, printing, fancy meals, and of course, all the doodads and knick knacks that one must include to be on the cutting edge of wedding planning bliss.

Which brings me to a website that I wish had been around when we were planning our wedding. They specialize in wedding favors. It’s called The Knot Wedding Shop and they are the largest wedding supplies store on the Web. They have more stuff than you can imagine for a wedding. Far more than was available when we were married. You can even get personalized items such as the delightful chocolates I’ve illustrated here. Personalization of wedding items is big nowadays and I can see how it would make a wedding more fun for attendees that like to keep a little memory tucked away or scrapbooked. The Knot Wedding Shop can handle that on a wide array of items.

So, don’t miss out. I know our wedding would have been a lot more fun for the guests if we had provided a bottle of personalized hot sauce for all the men, and plantable paper cards seeded with wildflowers for the ladies. Memmmm-o-ries are made of this…
